I bought a Linksys Wireless-N router to go with my new Sony Laptop that supports Wireless-N. When I first connect to it, I connect at 130Mbs. However, once I setup WEP 128 security, I can only connect at 54Mbs. When I reset the router to have no security, I connect at 130Mbs. Any ideas?

Like the first poster said I would tell you to TRY WPA not wep.
WPA is more secure and generally better. I will also say that because wireless N is not a :"finished" standard you may find issues between different manufacturers at this point. Many have just different ideas on how to implement the standard! So Linksys and Sony may be using slightly different codes which may cause this. Visit the Linksys site, be sure you have the latest firmware for your router and if not do an update it may correct the issue for you!
However, try WPA first and see if you still have the throughput loss. Normally there is a SLIGHT loss but not 1/2.

First, I would change WEP security to one of the PSK modes. WEP security is an old encryption system that is worthless except against the most amateurish attack. Switch to one of the PSK options offered by Wireless N -- either PSK-Personal or PSK2-Personal. They are easy to set up and much more secure than WEP. (WPA security is also much better than WEP but I'm not sure if the Wireless N router offers it.)

I don't know if the reduction in performance when you switch to encrypted mode has anything to do with the WEP encryption. Switch encryption mode and see.
