Toshiba is overpriced and you pay for the name in a lot of cases in the better of their computers.

Dell is running strong in performance and price. I recently quoted a 17" laptop for a friend and the only laptop rated better by Consumer Reports was a Mac for $1000 more. And the only difference between the Dell and the Mac was that the Mac monitor was rated Very Good and the Dell monitor was rated good. I just don't think it's worth $1000 for the Mac logo on a laptop.

I wouldn't personally touch a Compaq, Gateway, HP, etc. In my humble opinion they are mostly junk machines.

I'd recommend you take a good long look at the Dells. The laptop I quoted for a friend was an Inspiron 1720. I personally have and XPS 410. Both are very good manchines.

Hope this helps.

depends on the model, the dell xps is the absloute best, but when you go down their model chain toshiba starts to pull ahead, compaq and gateway are both kinda bargin bin deals, I wouldn't expect much of them.

If you want to get the most for your money look at acer, I know I know you see the name and think they're just the crappiest things in the world. I bought one right after highschool because my parents would only get the cheapest thing out there however, it has held up great, I've had no problems in two years and the keyboard is very big. They also have top of the line stuff, like a ferrari laptop set, which could probably out preform most new desktops, you should look at what they've got, I was really suprised.

Have worked with Compaq, Dell and Gateway.

About 1 in every 10 compaq we got arrived DOA. Quite using them. (But that was before HP purchased the company)

Toshibas work good, but are a pain to service. Poorly laid out and not a lot of techinical information available to assist with repairs.

Dell: about 1 in 100 DOA. Nice layout makes servicing them much easier that any other brand I have worked on. Excellent reference and support material.

Of the three, I would go with the Dell

Toshiba, Dell isn't that good anymore and I've owned many Compaqs, which normally has problems. Gateway is probably ok, but Toshiba is much better

I have been repairing laptops for over 7 years and the name that stands out is Dell. The customer service isnt that great but as far as quality it stands up. The prices are fair and when you have a major problem its easily fixed. The second Choice would be HP I feel the same with them as I do dell except HP's customer service is better. After this its just getting the right amount of Ram & Fast CPU I recomend no lower than 2gb of Ram 2.5ghz Dual core CPU

Hope This helps
Good Luck!!!

If you're looking for a low budget laptop then you can definitely go for other brands but if you want best after service you should go for Dell because dell is the only company which is best in service even if you have any problem they can replace your laptop with the new one if it in warranty not any other company do

it all depends on what you are looking to spend. Dell is weird because when you want upgrades you have to buy their special ones, Compaq is a low end brand, Toshiba is a nice one, if your looking at spending a fair bit i'd go with Mac. low end ones id go with Acer because they are fairly reasonable and good processors and memory etc with them.

out of those choices id say Toshiba. Look at Acer too.
