As far as staying downtown....as long as you are looking to spend more then $150 a night, stay at the historic Brown Palace. Or for a more modernized hotel, the Marriot Denver City Center is a VERY nice highrise hotel off California Street I believe. Only about 2 blocks away from the 16th Street Mall and Lower Downtown(aka LoDo, the entertainment distric. There is also a large firworks display over downtown that night.

Lots of hotels in and around Denver have New Years Eve parties and specials for that night. I think last year the Hyatt had a deal that included room rate, party that night and buffet breakfast the next morning with late check out. Other hotels do the same thing with some just being more extravagant than others. Also you can jsut get a regular hotel room anywhere and just walk around the 16th street mall but Im sure it will be cold. Also every club in town has a party. There will certainly be a cover. Usually around $40. I cant really recommend a place cuz honestly its New Years. Parties everywhere are crazy!

I don't know about Denver - I'm sure there are a lot of options. I do know that the Boulderado Hotel in Boulder is doing something that looked very nice:

Try to get reservations for the Brown palace. Great place but pricey.
