The German nation - the group of peoples speaking the German language - was the last of the so called "nation states" to come into existence.

Because all of the other western European nations, had all long ago established colonial empires, the new Germany was trying its best to catch up: the others had gained enormous riches from their colonies, and the Germans were simply trying to catch up.

This I think was the primary cause of their starting WW I. They were literally "green with envy".

The Kaiser wanted more control of Europe and this started WW1. Nationalism is trying to own the state through the government. An exteme of this was the Nazi's. Rather terrible sentence structure but you get the idea.
