ok say something costs $1,000
like on amazon or whatever..
that works out at about £500 so if i were to buy it from there + p&p etc
would it work out cheaper than if i bought it from a shop in the uk for £1,000?? lol.... or does it not work like tht

You'll pay 17% VAT on the item when it enters the UK (that 17% is already in the retail prices you pay in UK shops). You'll also pay for shipping.

You may also pay duty depending on where the goods were manufactured and whether your country charges duty on such products. You will not pay duty on EU-made goods, though.

You need to work the numbers, and watch for incompatibilities. Exchange rates change constantly, shipping from far away will be more. If the power outlets are different wherever you buy it, it may come with an unusable power adapter/cord, which you will then need to replace.

In general, it's better to buy from your own country. At least you won't have to worry about the power plug fitting.
