I have friends who despise that everytime something happens to a child that people act like it is worse than if it happens to an adult. I am personally indifferent but they get totally ticked off about it. It's like 5 year old gets hit by car and is in hospital with stitches and then they whisper oh yeah and 2 adults died. My one friend goes off for hrs about this...it cracks me up. What do you think?

I do think our culture (American) puts children on a pedestal. I'm not sure that it's always a bad thing though. It does seem extra tragic when a child dies, so much lost potential. On the other hand, I do find it annoying the way people expect the world to be kid-friendly. I suspect some of this is what annoys your friend (wholesome media, watching your mouth in public, endless feel-good blathering about it taking a village, etc.) I think that children need to learn to make their way in an adult-centered world.

To loose a child is far worse than an adult. Adults have had a large dose of life, particularly older adults. Loosing children or young adults is to loose a piece of the future. We loose a bit of potential. We will never know how that child or young person could have changed the world.

Those of us who are parents and grandparents can only imagine how horrible the pain is for a parent who outlives their child. I seriously do not think anything is more devastating than having the child you gave birth to, changed diapers on, carried around, cuddled and had such grand plans and dreams for, die.

I have a 5 year old grandson. If he were killed by a car, there would be a hole in my heart that could never be filled. His dad and mom would be inconsolable. Nothing anyone could do would ever make the world right again.

Your friend is obviously not very empathetic. He/she had much to learn about life.

It is worse, it isn't child worship. Obviously you don't have any children. Children haven't had a chance to be on this earth very long and adults are here to protect them, so when something bad happens to a child I think it is sad.

I still think it is horrible when bad things happen to adults, but to feel indifferent when something bad happens to a child vs an adult, and for you to find it humorous when your friend seems passionate about children, I think you got a screw loose.

well, if it happens to a kid, its almost more devastating, because a child still has his whole life ahead of him. if he dies, he'll never experience what life was really like. if he gets injured (loses a limb, gets paralyzed, gets real bad scarring), he will never get a fair shot at life. he'll be treated differently for his whole life. also, kids are more fragile than adults

whereas if it happens to an adult, they've had a pretty full life, and people don't feel as bad for them

i too am indifferent, but this is probably how others look at it.

i agree with rev. ron and heather s..... it is different when something happens to a child...he or she hasn't even lived yet. i'd rather something happen to me than a child any day. children can not comprehend things as an adult does and they will feel twice as much terror and fear as an adult.

I dunno....

My heart goes out more to children who are hurt than to adults who are hurt.

people are more sympathetic to children because they are seen as vulnerable. however, i do not understand when people abuse their kids to the point of killing them and then get a few years in prison for "abuse resulting in death". hello? did they not just commit murder?
