I owned few domain names and bought it through Yahoo. They all expired few months ago, i did not renew them. Today, just for the heck of it, i checked to see if i can buy back the domain names again but it said its already sold. So i went to WHOIS to check out who owns it, it still shows me as the owner/administrator. How can this be? i didn't make a payment? Does Yahoo hold the domain name or something? how can i get rid of it so it doesn't show me as the owner and make the domain name available again to others?

WHOIS will show you as the owner for awhile... Remember, web hosting (Yahoo!) bought you a name registration for free! So, if you *first* got the website in September of, say, '06, and quit paying in, say, November of '07, then even though you're no longer paying, your NAME is still registered through September of '08 (probably...) So...don't worry about it! Yahoo! will put up a temporary web page that says, something like, "This website is under destruction"

Lots of conflicting answers here without specifics as to why. The answer to your question depends on the following: 1. How long the domain name has been registered. 2. What's stated in your registration agreement with Yahoo. Without the answers to the questions I posted above, I'll give some shorthand answers anyway: if the domain name's been registered for at least 60 days starting from its initial creation date, then yes you can transfer the registration elsewhere. Otherwise, you risk losing the domain name if you cancel prematurely. The only one who can "authoritatively" give you the answer is Yahoo themselves. You might want to ask them specifics about it.

It may show your name until someone else gets it. As mentioned it will be back up for grabs in time. Some (Not sure Yahoo) may keep it for you for a certain amount of time.

it's propably not updated yet... it could even still be yours and for free the last few months! most domain name servers are not updated ,it happened that i didn't pay and the name just kept mine for a whole year! u can ask the customer service.
