5 criteria for something to be classified as a mineral:

Inorganic, solid, has a crystalline structure, naturally occuring, definite chemical composition.

Ice is an example of a mineral but water is NOT.

A mineral is something that is neither animal or vegetable. It is inorganic. Minerals are natual substances (not man-made) and can be things like gold, coal, salt, calcium, etc...
