Although I agree Graham Bonnet is a pretty atrocious singer the world has him to thank for bringing the uber-awesome Yngwie Malmsteen into the spotlight with the band Alcatrazz

And I own both of those Coverdale solo albums Smiley, but Thanks

I would have to say Rainbow. Though I never really cared for any of the post Dio material released after 1978. In my opinion Rainbow really took a step in the wrong direction after his departure. In doing this, they lost many hardcore followers at the time(myself included), while at the same time gaining a whole new legion of fans.
As far as Whitesnake are concerned, I did enjoy all of the albums you've mentioned as well. Have you ever listened to the David Coverdale pre-Whitesnake album titled, 'Whitesnake(1977)? David also released a follow up called 'Northwinds'(1978). They were both pretty decent albums, and had more of a bluesy funky hard rock sound almost like 'Free' or 'Trapeze'. At the time of their release many hardcore Purple fans didn't care for the albums as they did contain a few soulful mellow ballads.

'Rainbow Rising' is an awsome album, but then again so is the Whitesnake live album 'Ain't no love in the heart of the city'. However, I've never liked Coverdale that much (thought him a bit of a poser). Additionally I never really got into Whitesnake after Marsden and Moody letf/kicked out, as I prefer the earlier, bluesy stuff. You forgot to mention Ian Gillans solo project, 'Gillan', I saw them a couple of times back in the 80's, they were great live. So to cut a long story short, Rainbow for me.

Rainbow:-Blackmore can combine his talent with any type of musician/singer, Coverdale struggles to get away from his commercial/funk background and never seems to fulfil the early promise he had with Purple.Rainbow unfortunately was never the same after the death of Cozy Powell and these days Blackmore seems to be happy playing folk music with Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull in a thing called Blackmores Nites.Best Rainbow Albums :-long live rock'n'roll,on stage, pot of goldand the classic rainbow rising.if a definitive of all the purple/ranbow/whitesnake/gillan is needed try Purple Rainbows

They were both great bands at one point but then they eventually went downhill. For me, Rainbow lost it when Dio left and was replaced by Graham Bonnet. And Whitesnake became just another MTV hair metal band.

But on the plus side however, if those events never happened, Black Sabbath probably wouldn't have made classic albums like "Heaven And Hell" and "Mob Rules" and we (the male populace anyway) wouldn't have had Tawny Kitaen to drool over in those Whitsnake videos.

I would have to choose Dio era Rainbow as my favourite Deep Purple splinter group.

Both, but I prefer Whitesnake. Over the course of their career, you can always depend on Coverdale's silky smooth voice.

Edited b/c I had my mind of something other than the question when I answered it.
