"CARACAS, Venezuela - Humbled by his first electoral defeat ever, President Hugo Chavez said Monday he may have been too ambitious in asking voters to let him stand indefinitely for re-election and endorse a huge leap to a socialist state.

"I understand and accept that the proposal I made was quite profound and intense," he said after voters narrowly rejected the sweeping constitutional reforms by 51 percent to 49 percent.

Opposition activists were ecstatic as the results were announced shortly after midnight — with 88 percent of the vote counted, the trend was declared irreversible by elections council chief Tibisay Lucena."

The only reason the contest was so close was clearly because Chavez was cheating.

"The vote to give Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez near dictatorial powers was probably not as close as the announced tally - 51-49. Many observers, in fact, believe that it was a landslide against Chavez who manipulated the vote to lessen his embarrassment. Almost all of the pre-election polls had the NO! camp winning by more than 55%."

Thankfully, a majority of the Venezuelan people still have enough common sense to not forgo their freedoms for their generations and possible future generations.

It's been tried before many times -- socialistic states eventually all fail - because the state rewards those who do not produce, do not take life responsibly.

Because he's taking reforms too far. He's attempting to help the poor which is fine, but he's doing it at the expense of the middle and upper middle classes. He's already begun confiscating some private property and giving it to the poor. He's creating animosity among the populace, driving a wedge between the haves and have nots.

Because he is a communist, and it could be that that particular country doesn't want to be stuck under the same president for 50 years. Thats to put it mildly. Also, did you hear that the Venezuelan president was also going to cut off oil supply to the U.S.? What do you think about that?
