The US central time is six hours before GMT and therefore 5 PM GMT is 11AM US central time.
Please tell your British friend that it is no longer called GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) but UTC (Universal Time Convention).

go to time zones.com. you can get every time zone in the world and it already translated for you. you just click on the time zone and it tells you what time it is there.
