It certainly is not easy -- but I find it depends a lot on the question itself. For the most part, women's answers are more wordy and descriptive.
There is no set way to determine gender, except for possibly the Avatar's nickname and//or picture.

well sometimes i get a little confused when a female avatar refers to herself as a "him" but other than that i think ive got it figured out
