GWS. Forum for all of us.
Do folk really care about each other?
Or do we merely post the odd question which comes to mind?
Christmas, I feel brings out the best in all of us.
We think about those who have not at this time of year.
OK.
We should throughout the year, but as many of us acknowledge, this is the time of year to help.
So, how are you helping those who have not this Christmas?

Tracey- Whatever you can do in your country will help.
What we need to get across globally is that if each of us give a little then all will benefit.

Sex Fairy- You are a STAR.
Just get one person you know to do the same then that will help.
That is what GWS is all about.
Helping all.

Before The Troll Question appears regarding me this Christmas.
My little adopted daughter in The Philipines will have the food on the table for her and her grandmother, but this is provided throughout the year.
Andy, guy I am sponsoring through Uni, will have the money to go and see his mum.
Doing my bit.

Reddevil- Warming it is to read your post.
Your children are our future.
If they are doing good things now, then there is hope for us all.

wrack n' ruin.
It is to be hoped that life smiles on you.

Cindy Loo.
Isn't it humbling that you and I can help.
Matters to the children we are helping.
Imagine if everyone who is a poster on here did that- Well there would be an awful lot of children who would benefit.
And before any Troll has a go we sponsor because we want to and are not suggesting that anyone else needs to do so.

My wife, kids and I decided to have a smaller Christmas, and take the money we would have spent and sponsor 2 families and donate the rest to the local food bank.

My kids were not thrilled with the idea initially, but my wife and I took them shopping for the families this w/e, and the kids started really getting into it.

Over Christmas vacation, we also committed to going thru our house and cleaning it out, donating the extra stuff to goodwill or offering it on freecycle.

Wonderful to hear others are thinking/acting along the same lines.

Happy Holidays! :-)

I think folks really do care, otherwise why would we continue to debate so heatedly these topics?

We help out year round, but more so during the Holiday Season. We do a monthly contribution to St. Jude's Medical, and several times a year we contribute to a local food bank. Eventually I want my kids to contribute their time, as I believe that is ultimately more valuable for everyone involved.

The local Walmart has a tree upfront and their are tickets on it, you take a ticket and it has a child's name and age and what they want for a gift, and then you go purchase it in the store and turn it in to customer service, and they make sure the child gets the gift. We did this last year and the kids LOVED picking the items out for the kids.

In fact just this morning I was talking to a walmart employee about the trees and we were swapping stories!

I do like how the holiday season is warming.....it's nice.

We don't celebrate Christmas ,only because Thailand is a Buddhist country, It is a hard holiday to celebrate alone, but I do, In Thailand I have so much more than the others and do my share (ing) all year round, not just at Christmas time. Thais are a very giving people, it is part of their religion.
Yes people do care !

Thoughtful of you, Kate to ask this question.

My "sponsored" child in Malawi has food, clothing and schooling for what is a pittance to most in the west. I am honored and blessed to be able to participate.
It's not much, but even though by American standards, I don't have a lot, I'm filthy rich compared to most in the world. I am very aware of this and grateful for everything I have. It's only right to share with those who have nothing.

The only difference between me and that little boy in Malawi is that I was blessed to be born in America, to healthy parents who could provide for me, and he wasn't. I didn't deserve my situation any more than he deserves his.

Yes, I donated a lot of really nice, quality clothes, purses, almost new shoes etc to a women's shelter... that's all I can give now, but it's all good stuff, not junk. I hope it will help someone start her life over.

PS -that's the idea in all religions with lent and all, to know how the poor feel when they have nothing to eat... I know that's the idea behind Ramadan for sure...

Does that mean I have to be nice to Guns_fan, Empanada and Rebirth if he ever shows up again?

On the serious side, I've heard that food pantries are very short on canned goods and non-perishables this year. Please, everyone...each time you shop, buy some extra. Many supermarkets have in-store food drives where you can leave what you buy with them.

Bah! Humbug!

Why should I waste my resources on the surplus population? Why throw good money after bad? Where's the return?

The poor are poor because Providence has so ordained. Shall I contend with Providence?

Heaven forfend! I shall direct my resources where they are best used. By me. Let others do as they may. They will not alter the laws of nature one whit. The poor have as they deserve. Let them see to their own welfare, and I to mine.
