It's usually a key that your car came with that will allow you to unlock and start the car, but with some cars will not open the trunk or glove compartment. It is usually a key that looks like a stripped down version of your regular key (or if you have one of those remote/key combos, it is just a key with no remote).

A Valet key is a special key that unlocks the driver's door and ignition, but not the trunk, glove box, or other secure storage area within the car. It is the key that's supposed to be given to the valet who parks your car when you go shopping.

I think a valet key is a key that only opens the doors and starts the car, it won't open the trunk or anything else. You give it to the valet people that park your car.

These are used on many High end cars. Depends on the Manufacture, exactly what features are built into the key.
As some have stated, it will usually only work in the door and ignition.
On GM cars there is a computer chip in the Key itself. It is used on High end cars such as Corvette, Cadillac, etc.
On Corvettes and V-series Cadillacs, the valet key will not allow the car to be driven over 35MPH.
This is a wonderful feature for expensive HiPerformace cars.
Personally, if I was driving a $70K car, I would never let some 20 year old kid park it for me.

a valet key's function is to unlock the door but not the glove and trunk and to be able to start the engine so the valet attendant can drive your vehicle.had purchased a vehicle from rosner of fredericksburg va, and they owe me a "valet key", sad to say, all of the guys even the manager there who works for CAR does'nt even know the function of a valet key, they keep on saying that a valet key's function is just to unlock the door not for the ignition! so, up to now I did not get what they owe me. ROSNER keep your promise! poor ROSNER you have hired wrong people!!! please hire people that has common sense too and knowledge about vehicles!

That's the extra key, marked as such, that prevents the stoner Parking Attendent from getting in the glove box or trunk and stealing all your stuff.

The valet key only opens the doors and starts the ignition.

The one you give to the valet, so they can park your car but not open the trunk or gas.
