Perhaps because it is said in a derogatory manner. In fact, it usually is.
I know a gentleman from the Caribbean, who was stoned and had trash thrown on him because he looks what his attackers felt was Pakistani. Actually, he is Christian and has never been to Pakistan.
Also, there was a Nigerian lady who was called Paki and she resented it intensely. She strongly pointed out that she was Nigerian and did not appreciate being lalelled because of her look.

Rightly or wrongly. The words 'yank', 'scottie', 'swede', and, 'aussie' can be used in a positive sense. But if your honest people use the word paki only in a negative sense.
Of course they are exceptions.

It depends. I find "paki" is always offensive and usually applied incorrectly (to people not from Pakistan.)
As for the others, they can be unacceptable if the person you are addressing finds it offensive, or if it is said aggressively.
However, most yanks, paddies, jocks, krauts and frogs are fine with it.
btw SWEDE is the correct word for someone from Sweden, or a root vegetable, often mashed with carrots.

Because if you are from Pakistan you would be Pakistani.
The term "Paki" is used as a general insult for a lot of asians and is usually wrong, mis guided and commonly used by people with low intelligence.

the way i see it , if they are from pakistan , they are paki's which is a lot easier than pakistani...if i wanted to insult them i would use words that could not be mistaken for anything other than an insult...i have no problem with them so i usually dont refer to them at all...

This is a fair point as Paki is abbreviated from Pakistan. Now where is the offense in that.
