I would like to listen to radio stations in other states if possible. I need something like a receiver but don't know what kind? Please help.

Jerry's right - at night - and limited to the big 50,000 watt stations which are mostly syndicated talk these days.

I just bought an AT&T Tilt which allows internet browsing, so, once I figure it out, I'll be able to listen to internet radio - if the RIAA fees don't put them all out of business. Supposedly any cellphone capable of browsing will let you do this. You'll need to tether the phone to your car stereo - that's a technical question i haven't figured out yet, but Bluetooth or a built-in JPG adapter or lo-power FM transmitter might do the trick.

I think AM radios used to get stations from other states, at night.
