I'm equally afraid of both! I went to the doctor about a month ago for a cold, and when the nurse did my pulse, she asked me if I was nervous and then said my pulse was going so fast that she couldn't count it, lmao. And when I go to the dentist I white knuckle the arms of the chair. I only got a real fear of the dentist after I had a cavity filled and could feel the whole procedure as a kid. Since then I basically have a panic attack, lmao.

Also there was some girl that went to the dentist and ended up with a drill bit somewhere in her mouth, I can't remember where it was. I shouldn't have read that story in the newspaper, lol.

This may sound like an oxymoron, but the doctor has never hurt me. I associate trips to the doc with feeling sick or in pain, and once I see the doc he examines me, determines what is causing the problem and ordinarliy prescribes somme oral medication that tends to make me start feeling better almost immediately. I am a firm believer that certain events or traumas ( or what we perceived as a trauma) durign our childhood, lingers in our brain forever. Often we had had a terrible expereince with a dentist as a child, in fact we may have been far too young to even rememeber the event or the details of it, bit subcounsioulsy we hve a natural tendendcy to avoid the dentist as an adult; for this very reason.

I can, however remember numerous specific unpleasant and down right painful and cruel instances with the dentist as a child, most with the same dentist who in todda's day and age would not pass the oral or the verbal skills test to be classified as a "pedatric specialist" We have come a long way and now we have pediatric specialist in nearly every specialty. But I distinctly remember the horrific trip to the dentist as a kis. First of all, my mom was not ALLWED in the back with me, there were of cours eno jungle gymes or pther fun play things to occupy my mind prior to bring forcefully taken the sterile, cold back room. I certainly was not met with kid friendly dental asstistants, who smiled and told me to relax and jsut take my time. They pretyy much told me to hush so we could hurry up and get this over. I can vividly recall being held down in the dental chair as i was given several "shots" to numb my gums, of ocurse the dub a--s dentist wore glasses so it was if i had a mirror in front of me so I could watch the giagantic needle go in.

Needless to say they NEVER manages to completely numb the are that they were drilling on an even though i told them i was starting to feel pain (as a kid I was ignored) the drilling would get louder and normally when i was having a cavity filled, because i wa s"one of th euncooperative kids) who refused (more like just could not do it) keep her mouth wide open, the placed this plastci type thing that covered my mouth it was called "A raincoat", and they clipped it really hard with some silver thing on to the teeth not being drilled on, and yep!!! you guessed it, i would shoot up pu tof that chair like my butt was on fire, cuxz sure enough judt as I tried to warn them, them novacane had started to wear off. I HATED THE DENTIST AND STILL DO, THEY STILL OCASIONALLY MISJUDGE THE AMOUNT OG TIME THE NOVACANE WILL LAST. THAT FRILLING HURTS SO BAD I CAN STILL FEEL IT AS I WRITE THIS.

going to the doctor was no picnic, but they plaued silly games tried to ksr you laugh, you got a lolly pop. normamlly it was a checkup no big deal nd the very two very worst things that ever happende were (1) GETTING YOUR FINGER PRICKEED, YEAH IT HURT BCK THEN, BU TNOT TOO BAD AND NO SURRISES, THEY TOLD YOU WHAT WAS COMINGAND HOW LONG IT WOULD LAST. then if your labs were bad you might have tohave a shot. ouch, but not so bad and it was over in 10 seconds with the dr. telling me

Now our kids go to the dentist they get some "ggofy gas" then they get a "tckly tingle" beeofre they get their "bubbles" bubbles = shot, bit i have been told "we don't use the word shot anyway then they get a pair of headphones so they can jam out with the music so loud they can;t hear the srilling, or they can also watch tv.

if i had a dentist like that as a kid, who did ot repeatedly cause me excrutiatign ain, i may not have the fesr of a dentidt that I still have today

I admit I 'm one of those people that are horrified at the thought of visiting the dentist . I think it's a control thing you're laid back in the chair you have to stand still and have your mouth wide opened for long periods of time .Not to mention the sound of the drills and all those tools in your mouth . You feel like you are being held captive in that chair .To me it's worse then giving birth which I have 3 times .

I'm not afraid of either.I go to the dentist every month, which could be why. Although I totally understand why someone would be afraid of both.. or one over the other.

They both supply needles, sharp, cold objects and require some form of touching, either in the mouth or various other places!

Probably people experience more pain from dental visits than from Doctor's visits......I have always said that if you want to drive me mad, put me in a dark room, and turn on a dentist's drill. The sound of the drill makes my skin crawl.....
