For instance, my school uses "Websense" to filter the internet, and it blocks so many things for virtually no reason. I don't believe in Censorship. Rating systems, yes, but censorship, no. And you?

No, school filtering systems are not appropriate in a place of education, any more then banning books is appropriate in a the school library.

Some might make the argument that librarians, even if they don't ban books, do have to select which books to have. This is true.

The difference is that in the case of the web, the school has to select which sites NOT to have, which is akin to banning. the argument doesn't change just because the banning is software based, or because the software makes the decision in real time.

I might reconsider if the software was as transparent in its reasoning to the public as a librarian would need to if s/he decided to ban a book.

I think that in a school system for people under the age of 18, censorship is quite acceptable and responsible. There are some things that minors are not supposed to be exposed to.
I know that a filter system can filter out innocent material as well as bad stuff. But, those are the breaks. Nothing's perfect. And some parents may allow their children more freedom than others, for various reasons. Some bad stuff gets past the filter too.
If you want to see something that the school filter blocks, ask your parents to see it at home or in a library or someplace. The library where I live has a filter for minors using the computer, but adults are allowed to see everything, and adults can authorize their own children to browse without the filter.

I think censorship should be left up the individual. It is our job to screen what we allow in our lives and the lives of our kids until they become of age.
