The tree's outline seems too sharp, and yes, there is that problem with the shading. Try playing around with the colorize tool on the tree layer, or put a new, slightly transparent colored layer over the tree layer, to give it a sort of tint.

My critique is the background and the tree don't match.
It feels like there is a filter on the background that doesn't show up in the tree. Also, the lighting is different for both. The background looks epic and can enhance the tree but the tree's lighting and shadow point the sun in a different direction from the what happening in the back. You can adjust the lighting but I would try adding fog to the tree first it might be able to hide some of the shadow and lighting problems of the tree.

The only way to adjust the lighting is with either your levels or contrast grid under the heading of adjustments. But I would not recommend it as this may make it look grainy since photoshop works on a pixel and not vector engine. Filters that make it look like pastells or watercolor may also give a pixeled effect.

The light seems to be radiating up as opposed to down, I'm not sure how you have the mask set up but you could feather the top of the light more.

I like your pictures. You are a very talented photographer. I don't think the lighting is bad at all. It sets a somewhat somber mood to the picture. Keep up the good work!

Hey I'm an art teacher and trust me I love those pics, we don't have snow here in Jamaica so I'm really not sure if thats snow or the plant itself but it makes it sweet to look at, I do know one thing for sure though and its that looks GREAT!

It wud have made a better composition if the leaves aren't "abruptly" cut. However, I do love the colors & how they look collectively. Nice job on that! =D

It looks really good!
How about using harmonious colours to make the tree stand out more. Like using a lemony yellow against th purple back ground. It will really make it pop out.

What happens if you use the contrast feature on the layer just containing the tree??? The two other images look great.
