It's possible, but it seems like a bad idea. People who will get their transmission changed usually want a manual instead of a lame automatic. The big problem is that the parts can be expensive and it's very complicated to change a manual to an automatic transmission. It will cost a heck of a lot of money because the operation takes such a long time. It's not worth it. Just man up and drive with that manual or just sell the car and get one with an automatic.

I aguree, think about what you need to do, for example, cut a hole in your console and run the linkage from the shifter back to the tranny, same with the pedals, you will need a whole new manual transmission, there is no way to turn an automatic into a manual using the equipment that is there.
Custom drive shaft
Tuning and balancing of the engine
Clutch
Clutch pedal
Shifter assembly
Linkage
are just some of the things you will need.
and that's all if you can find a transmission that will fit and have the right gear ratio. Even if you spend the $5000+ to do this it never works out like it should and you'll just find yourself in a money pit.
Get a manual one, trust me.

You will probably also need to switch the back end of the engine, flywheel, etc., and the driveshaft, or at least the front part if it is segmented. You may be able to get by with the same radiatior, but check on that. Were there computers on the '77s? I don't remember and am too lazy to look it up. At least the chip will have to be replaced if there were.
And that should be a start.

none of this will be any help to you but
years ago, i had an '81 trans am with an automatic tranny that i wanted to switch for a 4 spd.
it can be done, but it isn't a project to undertake unless you are a skilled mechanic. you'll have to install a clutch pedal and modify the console for the gearshift and other fun stuff. it would be nice if there was a "changeover kit" haha but i don't believe there is.
20 years ago, when i was trying to do this i finally gave up on the idea because i couldn't find anyone to talk to who had actually done the switch.
i hate automatic transmissions.
well, good luck to you.

If you have lots&lots of money it can be done.everything from the motor back has to be changed, then you have to hang a clutch pedal in,and a shifter. If you haven't done anything like this it is more trouble than the car is worth.Sell it and buy one with a straight shift in it.It is easier to put in a high powered motor than do what you are thinking of doing,SORRY.

Buy a new car :)
Usually too expensive to switch them, but buying a different car and selling what you have will possibly make you money :)
