If you have XP installed already, use diskpart or the GUI management tool

GUI (easiest)
Start-->Run
diskmgmt.msc

Create a new partition in "Free" space. First make an entended partition, then create three logical partitions (4 total) in the entended partition.

for console
start-->Run
cmd
diskpart

use this guide and remember to create an extended partition first (not a primary) then create logical partitions in the extended partition. You are only allowed 4 primary paritions on 1 physical hdd, but you can make as many extended logical partitions as you want.

If you don't have XP installed yet, then boot from the XP machine and create the partitions during the setup before installation.

Boot from the XP CD. When you start the installation, it will show you the unpartitioned space thats there on the HDD. Here it will tell you to press a few keys to create any number of partitions you want to create.
Alternatively you can make a DOS bootable CD and booting from it and then running the command 'FDISK'. Again this will guide you through in creating the partitions in a wizard like interface.
Best of luck!!!!

You want to have four primary partitions? Do you plan to add on three other operating systems on the rest of the HD space? if not you might want to just create one primary partition for your XP OS, and the rest as an extended partition and create three logical drives on the extended partiion.

You can use FDisk to partition your hard drive from the command prompt, or you could simply insert the CD, and choose your partitions/and the amount of space you want to dedicate to each parition as u are installing windows!

Not a good idea on XP, it really needs 80 GB or more to cope with all the additional library files and data you will build up very quickly when in use.
