A passport MEETS the Real ID requirements. The Real ID requirements mandate that the drivers licenses issued by the states meet certain criteria and that they verify the identity of the person receiving the ID based on standards issued by the US government. It is NOT an id issued by the federal government.

If your state decides not to comply with the Real ID standards, you will need a passport to travel.

This is a strangely common misconception. There is no new ID card being issued or required. What Real ID does is creates a new set of national standards for states when they issue their ID's, along with creating a database for states to access to make sure they don't issue an ID to someone who shouldn't have it. There is no new national ID card. There is no requirement for anyone to carry a state ID for any purpose for which you don't need one today. You wont have the option to refuse a national ID card, as there won't be one to refuse. So, if you're traveling out of the country, a passport will be fine.

No, no matter what card you get, you still won't be able to fly. Just continue walking like the rest of us.

If they offer a card I will get it proudly-but I think they will argue about it for years-idiots.
