With Giovanni, I'd say. David is struggling with his confused sense of sexuality - is he "straight" or "gay"? Clearly, he's gay (as was the author, James Baldwin), and while life with Giovanni might not be any picnic, it would surely be better than David's living a lie with Hella (and do you think it's purely coincidental that her name is HELLa?)
