My ex and I built a basement out of the ICF forms. They were awesome! Basement went up in no time. It saved us a lot of money. Not sure what concrete is running right now per yard. That's where you would need to figure out what you are saving. My brother just finished an extension on his house using them also. Saved a lot of time and he said it was a lot easier than when he did it with the concrete block on the other side of the house. I know it saves in the long run if you do it yourself. not sure of the cost difference with someone doing the work for you on this project.

I know that the insulation factor alone is worth it in the long run. Good luck!

With the fault line in California being what it is, why would you chance being buried in concrete? A stick home will have more flex in and earthquake of minimal R/S events and I would think a better chance of survival. Foam doesn't settle like fiberglas would. If the fiberglas gets moisture it absorbs and thus settles, not so with foam. If you go with the foam, make sure it has a fire retardant additive.
