I remember reading an article a while back that said that a number of scientists believe that when we see someone else yawn it triggers a learning center in our brain that we use to learn how to do things by watching and mimicking other people. So when we see someone yawn this part of our brain causes us to do the same thing.

Scientists think that animals (not only humans) indicate their sleepiness to others in a group by yawning, as if to say "I think it's time for a nap, what do you think?".
