For the the Exercist would have to be first. That movie is just traumatizing. I am 22 now and i STILL can't watch it. I mean... stabbing herself in the crotch with a crucifix? Just some of the stuff she says and some of those scenes, I just can't watch it!
Jaws would have to come in a close second. I was SO SCARED. We had a pool in our yard and I wouldn't go in it by myself. And I had a Queen sized bed and I would sleep right in the middle just in case he came out of my floor to get me. I couldn't sleep on the edge of the bed! THAT is a traumatized child!
AND the movie IT. I am TERRIFIED of clowns and that movie scared the **** out of me! That is just wrong.

The movie "Time Machine" where the entire society walks into an underground "bomb shelter" only to be cannibalized. Also kids play by the water/rapids and throw each other in "for fun" without making any effort to save each other from certain death in those rapids because they thought would "disturb the peace of nature".
Not only is it violent, but it is violence disguised as peace, so it has a creepy psychological twist to it much like in the movie "Serenity". Also, up until I saw that movie, I thought following society somewhat blindly usually makes you safer...and it served as a shocking example just how wrong that thought can be.
Comparing these to current films, "Serenity" is a close runner up....but I still consider "Time Machine" the original. Also "The Wicker Man" is close behind because it shows just how vulnerable men are to consider women as "always the victim" as the man gets slayed by the same daughter and wife he was trying to save. Gore alone scares me a bit, but violence with psychological/political counterpoint scares me the most because it bears so much resemblance, in some ways, to reality.

Oh, man--the boat scene from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. That still creeps me out to this day. His creepy song that turns into screaming and then the flashing pictures of maggots, blood, etc. Blah!!! How did anyone think that would be appropriate for a kids movie?

Amityville Horror (first one). That was the first horror movie I ever saw all the way through. I think I was about 9. I was Catholic but that was the only time I ever prayed the rosary voluntarily. I did so until I saw the light of morning.

I totally agree with Feejayjo!! I am so freaked out by ET....he is not adorable, just freaky. And "The Neverending Story". A horse died, and there were statues of naked women and this ugly flying dog thing.....I'm still scared of those and I am 14 now!

I was 8 or 9 at a slumber party and we snuck downstairs and watched George Romero's "Night of the Living Dead". At 45 I can only watch it in the afternoon!

The Exorcist due to it being based on true events and it was just freaky.
I am a huge fan of Freddy Kreuger, though.

Definitely IT by Stephen King. Ever since seeing that evil clown with the pointy teeth, it took a long time before I could watch that movie in its entirety.
