I think any present given generously is good.
In my last birthday, my sister-in-law gave me a set consisting of a jar of an anti-wrinkle face cream and a tube of an under eye cream.
Perhaps some of you would consider this insulting.
But I use stuff like that, and I appreciated it. (Anyway, I must say I wouldn't offer someone that as the person could think I I was implying she was old).
While at this, last year I saw at a windowshop a book titled "Protocol and Good manners".
I remembered somone that book would be very appropriate to offer to... But I don't think that would be truly insulting... Because do you really think I would spend any money with such *******?... (To me, that would be a good reason for him to feel flattered... Screw him!)
However, I think I can now remember of a present which I considered to be truly insulting.
A friend once gave a present which I opened in front of her. It was a mirror with a golden plastic frame and a handle...
But as she saw the object, she exclaimed: "Oh, that wasn't for you. Now, that you have opened it, keep it. But this is your real present. Open it".
It was a golden plastic hair brush and a comb...
I wasn't impressed, but I didn't make any comments...
However, some days later, I saw in a shop a set consisting of the all those three accessories.
It was a girl's toy, and it was about 1 Euro.
I felt insulted that she didn't think the whole set was too cheap and innapropriate for a twenty something, but she even parted it, and used it for 2 presents...
I don't care about the price of any presents, but this seemed really too stingy...

A roll-on deodorant that was already about one third emptied and other "used" toiletries -- by used I mean that the foil was removed and contents were taken out. Plus, all the toiletries were girly/ladies stuff like lavender, fruit and spices, and I m a guy and expected she would give me mens toiletries.
It was all cheap **** from Yves Rocher she didn t like herself, but she tried to make it look better by using a QVC box for it.
I told her in an email that I won t accept any gifts from her anymore, nor give her anything in the future. Her behavior is absolutely insulting and I won t take it any longer.

I don't ever think I have received an insulting gift, except for the divorce papers, but that turned out to be one of the best presents ever.

Sounds like your m-i-l has a sense of humor, or is trying to insult you and make you leave her precious little boy.
Never got any insulting Christmas gifts, guess I have been lucky or the people who did not like me decided to not waste their time. LOL
