Yes it does. With practice you can maintain your mind for extended periods without any self generated thought.
It seems difficult at first but gets easier with practice.

Yes. There are other mental states, such as emotion. Besides this, there are non-intentional mental states, such as samadhi. I am using "intentional" in the technical sense of being about something. Mind is an irreducible property of matter. It may not be expressed in some arrangements of matter, but it is still there. Moreover, thoughts are not necessarily in the mind. For instance, there are an infinite number of assumptions and these cannot be in the mind as it is finite.

Interesting question to ponder...
The mind is a function of (a working) brain... so those who are considered brain dead don't have any brain activity to record. So, I would probably come to the conclusion that without "thought" the mind would cease to exist.

It depends on what you mean by "mind".
Consciousness exists in human beings, but there is no real evidence that outside our attempts at educating apes, animals possess consciousness. All species have a functioning 'mind' in accordance with their place in nature.
