I've been receiving a bunch of NETFLIX DVDs that say "this dvd is for sale only" at the beginning of the presentation..
Are they allowed to rent "for sale only" dvds?

Well, I work in a video store.. and from what I can tell, even ours say that.. I think that message is a leftover from the days when video stores used to get the DVD's before they were released for the public to buy.. (and they would cost like $100 each for the store to buy).. It was a way to tell the difference between the $100 ones and the common ones later.. but now we get the same dvd's that are going for the public for sale.. we do have to wait until it is publically available to rent out however..

Netflix is legal!!! What they are referring to is the rebroadcast, or public display- I.E. you're charging people to come to your home and watch the movie there. in other words making a profit off their film. Netflix is more like a video store. By the way, does it not say that same message at the start of a movie you rent from the video store? Yes it does, Nuff said then, Netflix is legal.

They are not doing anything illegal. Stores have the right to rent out bought dvd's. That is how they get them in the first place. They buy the dvd from the studio then compensate them for renting it...so it is not illegal.
