As Greek Barbie mentioned above, they are the same place. I believe that Heraklion is the "English" name for the region.
If you do a search on Google for "Iraklion Crete", just before the results, Google askes if you meant "Heraklion Crete".
Its like your examples of Kriti and Crete, Rodos and Rhodes. There are others as well, such as Zante and Zakynthos, Athens and Athina, and many others.

Same place,same city :) Iraklio(ÎÏάκλειο) is the Greek name for the city and Heraklion is the English one :)

It's the same place, just the ancient Greek transcription and the modern Greek transcription.
