The fact that the north star always appears at an altitude above the northern horizon equal to the latitude of that place, and that it is always below the horizon when you are south of the equator, shows that Earth is round. By measuring the number of miles that equals one degree of latitude, which is to say how many miles south you have to go to see the north star 1 degree lower in the sky, and multiplying by 360 will tell you how far it is around the world.
