Multiply the top and bottom of each fraction to leave the same number on the bottom. This would give:

1 x 11 / 5 x 11 + 1 x 5 / 11 x 5

giving

11 / 55 + 5 / 55

These two numbers on top can be added to give

16 / 55

To add fractions, you have to create a common denominator.
In this case, you need a number that both 5 and 11 will
divide into. One thing that always works is to multiply the numbers together. 5X11 = 55.

Then you convert both fractions into 55th's.

1/5 = ?/55 To turn 5 into 55 you must multiply by 11 so
1/5 * 11/11 = 11/55

1/11 = ?/55 To turn 11 into 55 you must multiply by 5 so
1/11*5/5 = 5/55

then you can do the addition
1/5+1/11 = 11/55 + 5/55 = 16/55

This can't be reduced any further, so you are done.

Make them have common denominators then add them. Here are the steps.
Multiply the left number, top and bottom by the denominator (bottom part) of the right number.
1*11/5*11=11/55
Do the same with the right number.
1*5/11*5=5/55
Add them.
11/55+5/55=16/55
Simplify, if possible.
In this case it is not possible therefore the answer is 16/55.
