I don't feel that anyone who can think enough to form an opinion can honestly remain neutral. One may say he is neutral in order to stay out of a situation, but he has to feel one way or the other in his concerns. It is my opinion that those who do this are fooling themselves only and are in denial of the facts in their heads. It is best not to openly take sides, but one must know his own mind. This is reality to the individual.

It depends on the situation. If a close friend is suicidal, you would obviously "take sides" and either try to talk him out of it or prevent it.
But if the issue is less critical, or if you are not sure of the best course of action, staying neutral may be the best course. In that case, you may try to help the person use their own best judgment by exploring their options, and the consequences of those options.
The dangers of taking a side is that you may offend either your friend, or the other party, who may also be a friend. Or you may help convince someone to decide one way, and it doesn't work out, so you are the culprit.
Personally, if I think that I may have some intelligent input, or some helpful information, I will (usually) give my 2 cents worth if asked, but I won't push it. Ultimately, the person needs to make their own decision, and be responsible for it.

It depends if you believe in the side you are going to take. I personally tend to sit on the fence, not because I am afraid to put my point across but I look at every situation from both sides its a gift I have been given, I am still a very opinionated person but my mind is always open to a good argument.
Nuetral is good, you can't just jump to the defense of one thing when you haven't heard all the arguments for the other just so you are 'on a side'.

dont ever take the wrong persons side because of peer pressure. You can remain neutral but both parties may be a little annoyed. You can try to resolve the issue and make peace or just stay out of it.

Yes, its better to choose at least one side.
I've discovered that people who are neutral end up being hated by both the sides (because you're not supporting them).
Being neutral may sound smart, but at least by choosing a side only one person hates you instead of 2.

Ask this in philosophy and you can probably start a 3 hour debate lol.
since it's in psychology I'll give a shorter answer.
The answer is.. it's situational, and only time can tell if any decision was a good one or not... so just do what you feel is right, and let time sort the rest out.

Not if they both are your friends.
But sometimes you can take a side without really taking a side.
e.g. if you know that one person is definitely in the right, you could help the other person to see their point of view to help them towards agreement.
