Disgrace by Coetzee, a white South African, won Booker Prize in 1999 It has many layers that intertwine and makes you think about days after the book is finished. It explores dominance and dependence, boundaries, natural order and social order, etc. Very good.
Bel Canto by Ann Patchett, won orange prize and Faulkner PEN. It takes a look at a real hostage crisis from an operatic/human drama view point.
Running After Antelope by Scott Carrier. A collection of essays that are connected. He is a contributor to NPR's This American Life. A review: "Sometimes sad, sometimes haunting, often funny, Carrier writes about travels to war-torn areas, personal relationship crises, and, of course, his quest to chase down an antelope . . ." Hard to explain but amusing and interesting and short.
