do Americans place too much emphasis on particular freedoms?
It hasn't been that long ago that I was younger but, television and radio, to name just 2 have changed a great deal. We have become too desensitized to certain things. Condom commercials, profanity, nudity etc. But with our struggles to hold tight to our freedoms, are we maybe somehow picking at hairs just to allow it.
And... In no way, shape or form do I agree with censorship!

I also believe the condom commercials are needed... I have a son who is 19. My concern is that they aren't necessarily informational as they tend to make humor from them (Trojan Man).

Absolutely. It all has to do with freedom and pushing the envelope a little more. Have your ever seen Nip Tuck on Fox? Wow they cuss more than anything, and the sexual scenes are unheard of. I mean it comes on at 10PM on regular television. You hear every cuss word imaginable. But boy do I love the show.

Anyway...condom commericials are needed. I'd much rather see my child understand and know about safe sex rather than covering it up and letting them find out the hard way.

But we are allowing more and more things that used to be viewed harmful or the devil. Remember at some point Elvis was devil music. Jirating his hips was considered sexual and innapropriate.

I do believe we need to to be the ones as parents to censor what our children see. We can't leave it to the world to do the right thing (I mean look at Bush for crying out loud). We need to ensure that our role model for our kids are not a basketball player but ourselves.

At the same time we need to expose our children (realistically) to things because we don't want them to be so closed up that they're nieve or gullable. They need to know that the things they see on TV have consequences.

A little off topic on your question but I think it was helpful nevertheless.

As we can see in the rest of the world (Muslim countries, Venezuela, etc.), freedom is hard to live with. Everyone seems to want to control everyone else. I, too, do not like some of the commercials that are on when younger people are viewing TV. However, I did come across a program on BET that concerned the use of condoms to prevent pregnancies and STDs. It used an informal interview method with young people and was very informative. This kind of program wouldn't have many young viewers if it was allowed only late at night.

I do have a problem with the language that is used on both over the air TV and cable. I think we should have a voluntary code of language to follow on both formats that would eliminate foul language. Of course on the pay cable channels, freedom in language, and everything else.

Freedom doesn't involve any of that!
