I think he did everything he could to angle the election his way. Even then, the count came out against him. That tells him he probably lost by a huge margin and to discredit or outright ignore the results would in all likely hood result in total revolution.

He still has a few years in office to come up with some other way to stay in office. They didn't vote him out, they just said he couldn't change policiy to keep him in forever.
