This is at least the fourth time I have seen this same question being asked within the last week. The people running this scam must have sent out hundreds of these bogus 'job offers'. You are quite correct to be questioning the visa fee (1200 pounds, isn't it? Shouldn't be more than 100!), because, as you were correct in saying, the visa does indeed have to be obtained in your country.
Below is a link to a nearly identical question that I answered previously (which contains links to two other nearly identical questions that I answered previously). Enjoy.

I even have been given an furnish from solar Oil & gas co. uk with huge revenue and with all facility. collectively as they are giving us furnish with good-looking equipment and all facility.artwork enable , visa and price tag could be bared via organization, regardless of if that's genuine. that's unquestionably huge rip-off. There are not any huge subject for artwork enable, visa and price tag for top point organization.

It sounds like a scam. It's probably not the company at all, but rather someone pretending to be that company.

Did you have an actual in-person interview or was it just internet or over the phone? If it was in-person, then they're probably legit.

It's a scam.

Tell them that you'll be happy to report to the nearest British embassy and tender the fee personally...your scammers will give you all sorts of reasons why that can't be done, but they're all lies.
