Of course, I want privacy, which is why I have an internet washer to begin with. (I use CCleaner, which now does a Guttman overwrite.) At the end of each cleaning, CCleaner lists all the files it just erased. I began to wonder whether this list itself is now part of my computer's hard drive, or whether it is erased as well? It certainly would defeat the purpose of a cleaner if someone could reconstruct my internet history from the addresses of the temp files erased.

I can tell you for a fact, being that I have been a contractor for intelligence agency. No matter what any software company tell you that they can remove the data off your HDD, or use the "Guttman", overwrite, this is not true. A good forensic computer expert can still strip the data of your HDD.

There is only one way to destroy the data so that no expert can retrieve. Beat your HDD, to death with a hammer. Or remove the HDD, if you are selling or giving away your pc and let the person buy their own HDD. I put all my old HDD, in my home safe for security.

Most, not all, disk cleaners work by overwriting the data with random 1's and 0's many times before deleting it. Or, the program merely deletes the first letter of the file, making it unreadable, and therefore open to overwrite with new data. I know of only one program that will clean your drive beyond recovery. It's called Killdisk. It works by overwriting data on your disk with null values, that being neither 1's nor 0's, merely blank space. I know of no recovery software that can "read" a disk cleaned with Killdisk. However, I am not familiar with EVERY software program on earth either. Hope this has helped.
