You should know the person at least 2 years and be engaged for 1 year.
My husband and I knew each other for 5 years before marrying and now have been together 20.

Well officially and in a very old fashioned way an engagement is meant to take place to declare to the world and to each other that you intend to marry, and the engagement is a time to save money and prepare for the big event.

Of course very unwilling brides or grooms could prolong the engagement as long as they could get away with.

In a bygone era most girls were expected to be engaged before becoming intimate, which probably explains why so many men were quite keen to be engaged but not so quick to marry.

Its either too short or too long. 5 days to 5 years. Depends on the parties involved. The average length would be 2 years max. Mostly its 1 year.

I've heard of some engagments lasting 10 years or more. My parents were married exactly six weeks from when they met.
It all up to the people involved.

It depends on the person, but less than 6 months is risky, maybe 1 or 2 years...to know each other better...

I would guess 12-14 months.

Usually eight months to a year, as long as it takes in your area to book things like the minister/church, venue, caterer, etc.
