No, you don't have to protect roses from freezes at all and some roses like the knock outs are usually not effected by light freezes. I'm zone 7 and we've already had several freezing nights and the roses lasted for quite a while. They are only now starting to drop. It is normal for the roses to drop and go into hibernation for the winter months so just leave it alone and let it do it's thing. As soon as temps warm back up it will start producing again.
Good Luck

The freeze will cause the blooms to blacken, that's all. Providing your rose is not in a frost pocket or in very soggy ground you should need any extra protection for it. You could give it a 2-3" mulch around the base and prune off the top third to prevent windrock of the roots - but you don't even really need to do that until the Spring... :-)

If it's a freak freeze, and you don't expect it to continue to be cold in your area, go ahead and cover it.

Around here, we are officially in "winter", and the freezes will continue to come. Knock-out roses don't need extra winter protection like hybrid teas do, but of course, the actual flowers will not winter over. The shrub will go dormant, and you'll get new growth and flowers next season.
