She's 32 and artsy. She works for a Union in Seattle and is currently vacationing in rural Costa Rica. She does pottery and plays the violin. She speaks some Japanese and spent a year there. So, you kinda get the idea of what she is like. I just thought it'd be really sweet to gather pictures of us growing up together and kind of organize them to themes and making a scapbook looks fun! I think I could make it artsy and not soo cheesy, right? Any suggestions? It would be my first scrapbook. She is very sentimental so maybe she'd think it was sweet! I thought I'd kinda make it a "Sisters" theme. What do you think? I mean I don't want to use like lots of pink and put cutesy little stuff all over but I think I can be creative and make it look really artistic? THANKS FOR ANY ADVICE!

That is a great idea, it is actually what I am doing for my family this year, however my theme is my niece, she was 5 and killed in April. I am making copies of a memory book for the adults in my family. I have made several books before as gifts and they are always a favorite. Nothing beats a one of a kind gift, be sure to include stories i would feature a few favorite pictures, make a layout where they are the only photos on the page and journal the story behind it, then put a similar journal block (Blank) on the same page, so your sister can journal her own side of the story. For my Sisters pages I have used partners in crime, Life made us sisters choice made us friends, You and I will always be friends who share a family tree, I'll grow up when you do, and through the years; as page topics and let the pictures fall into whichever category they do. Be sure to put in accomplishments that you have acheived not only together, but seperately, vacation spots, pets and friends and family who have passed on. Just for fun I would have a we are alike, we are different or like night and day topic, or even a Mom likes me best page. Remember that you don't need to have the whole thing done at one time, a Scrapbook is something you can add to over the years and do together. Enjoy and hope it helps

I think it would be a very personal and thoughtful gift, and one she would treasure for life. You can try to be more artistic with it, but unless you are crafty yourself, then just use what you like and what you think looks nice and not what you think she would do to it. You don't want to lose that part of you in it, that would make it endearing. One thing I've tried that looks nice and gives you the feel of being there, is creating a background page made from a photo of the location where the picture was taken. For instance, if you have a photo of the two of you opening presents at Christmas, take a photo you have of the outside of the house at Christmas time, and print it out enlarged to full page but in sepia tone, or black and white. This will give the background a feeling of nostalgia, if the photos are in Black and White, use sepia tone for the background. Use a colored border around the photo like green and red of holly sprigs around it. If you have colored photos, then print the background photo in black and white. If you have a photo of the two of you in the punk style of the 80's , and you have a scanner, scan a segment of the front of your favorite 80's album cover and use it as the background, you can even lay the photo on the album where you want it, and flip it over onto the scanner and it is like you're on the album. If you have a photo ,and you have access to a blouse she use to wear that she has on in the photo(my family still has some clothing from the 40's to the present), press it, button it, lay it flat on the scanner with the buttons towards the side and the photo sticking up out of the pocket, and scan it. If you have a photo of the two of you shopping in the mall, take a photo of your favorite shop in the mall, and blow it up to use for the background. Or use a shopping bag from the store you always shopped in, as background. Thanksgiving at Grandparents , use a photo of their home as background, and include a photo of your grandparents in the upper outside corner, the one of you guys ,or the whole family in the center. Or a photo of the food on the table as the background. A Halloween photo, a colored fall photo of your town street blown up and put a sheet of black paper with the shape of a big pumpkin cut out of the center, place it over the street scene, and then the photo of you so it is on one part of the street scene and overlaps onto the black paper. Gives a nice 3D effect. You can cut pieces of candy she and you liked off of coupons or out of store flyers, to glue at different angles on the black paper around it. I hope these ideas are helpful. Mostly just look into your memory bank in your head and use the things you or she liked, to enhance the memory. And another thing you could do, is to include a packet of copies of the same photos and include a note, "A Christmas Challenge. Your challenge is to make a scapbook using the same photos and your own creativity, to be gifted to me, next Christmas." That way you both have the photos you cherish, but surrounded with the love of each other.

That sounds so nice, I bet she'll love. If she's sentimental and arty then no doubt she will. I did one for my boyfriend cause I'm the arty type and although he isn't he loves the things I make him and paintings I do because they mean so much more than something you buy... plus because it's a scrapbook you can put lovely little quotes and things in (there are websites with that kind of stuff if you're stuck) so for those reasons she will like it.

Good luck and have fun making it :)

2 years ago, I made my mom a Scrapbook. I started with pictures of her great grand parents, then parents then her and her siblings. I then did pictures of her and my dads wedding each of our births, then each one of her kids with their children. It was very basic blacks, whites and neutral colors.. vintage type decorations. My mom called me and told me it was the best gift she had ever gotten. I am 40 and my mom is 59 and she was very happy to have gotten a scrapbook from me for Christmas. My advice is do some stuff from when you were kids, growing up and leading to her life now. End it with something sentimental about sisterhood. hope this helps!

If you have never done one .. think, search online a bit .. pick a theme/idea and go with it ..

For instance a "WANTED" theme .. Wanted ... the little girl who used to do this or that, I dunno .. however you girls were .. and then make each page in a Wanted Poster theme ..

Or if you two were girly, do lots of sparkle, glitter, etc ..

Or stick to two main colors and do the whole book like that, then add color each picture has for a personal touch

Good Luck!

If you need any help, email ( mbfqueen @ yahoo . com ) me and I'd love to help .. I have a couple online Yahoo Scrapbook Groups as well ..

I think it would be a beautiful and thoughtful present, I would love something like that. How many gift cards or sweaters does a woman need anyway? Kudos to you for coming up with a creative idea. I'm thinking of doing one of my daughter and mom for my mom's Christmas present, but that will have lots of cheese factor because it kinda goes with 2 year olds. Good luck!!

Not cheesy at all! I have given a scrapbook to my niece and she loved it. There are so many awesome paper options out there that you don't have to go with the glitzy glam stuff. It can be quite elegant. Give it a whirl, although I would get on it...it's a pretty time consuming endeavor!

I think it would be a once in a lifetime gift and I have done it myself. We had a family reunion last year that my sister in law put together and I took all the pictures and my daughter (who is very good at scrapbooking) made her a wonderful scrapbook for my sister in laws birthday and she LOVED it!! It is a gift that no one else can give her and one that you will have made with your own hands and heart. I think she will LOVE it.

Scrapbooks are a GREAT gift....i gave one to my fiancee that deals with his military career. He loves it and shows it to any guests we have at our house and I also made him one that is just of pics of me to take with him when he is deployed....
they are a great and "from the heart" gift to give to anyone.
If you still think it is a cheesy gift, you could perhaps get a plain, wide framed picture frame and decorate that up, just like a scrapbook and then just pic the best pics to put in it.

A lot of times people will use an acronym letter on each page. For example, if you wanted to use SISTER, you could put on S on the first page and have on it only pictures that went with the s-word, which ever word you chose to go with s like sibling, supportive, spaghetti (hey, I don't know what memories you share with her!) and the next page would be all stuff that started with I. Or you could use her name and stuff that started with each of the letters. I made those for my nephews and they love them.
