I had to attend a formal gala this weekend. I did not watch the Lightning game, and they won. Someone at the gala had suggested, I need to take a break, because you can jinx a team by watching them all the time. This was coming from a guy that plays hockey in a local amateur league. He said he had not seen any Ottawa Senators games for the first 5 weeks of the season, and now that he is watching them again, they are losing. He added that he has gone months last season, not watching the Senators (his favorite team), to prevent being a jinx, which is common amongst his friends.

Crazy talk, I say. It is just silly to think that watching or not watching a game can change the outcome. It MAY prevent you from seeing your team lose as much.

Have you ever heard of this madness? Is this common? Do you think that he was pulling my leg?

Side note: LITY, I saw that you had mentioned Hank Aaron earlier. When I was about 8 years old, I went with my father to Chicago (your stomping grounds) on a business trip. We had to stop at some building, in downtown, La(something-or-other), and we were on the elevator. At the next floor, Hank Aaron got in the elevator. After have a brief chat with him about baseball, he got off the elevator, my dad turned to me, put his hand on my shoulders, and said, “I want you to understand, that we were just in the presence of greatness.” Any-who, I thought you’d get a kick out of a fond Haley memory of Chicago.:)

Yeah, it's silly, but it's weird how sometimes it works out that way. You turn on a game and your teams ahead. 5 minutes later they're down one. Oh, I better turn it off now!!

When I played baseball, I would usually put my catching gear on in a certain order, fasten the leg straps in a particular order, etc. Just becomes part of a routine, and if you get out of that routine, it somehow throws you off.

P.S. I think the guy was totally serious.

I've never met Hank. The only baseball player I recall meeting actually was Ernie Banks back in the 60s. An amazing man.

Baseball is one of my favourite sports to watch on TV, you can leave for 5-10 minutes and not miss a thing. The only other time you can do that while watching a sporting event is the last 30 seconds of a basketball game, you know....the 30 seconds that take 1 hour to play real time.

Jinxes? Let me put it this way: Last season, I got a customized New Jersey Devils jersey. I wore it to seven games, in seven different buildings: The Meadowlands against Buffalo, Madison Square Garden, the Nassau Coliseum, Philly, Boston, Washington, and then, this year, to the new Prudential Center against Toronto. The Devils won them all.

Then I went to a Devils game with my mother, who's become a big hockey fan in the last few years. She once told me that she went to all her high school's football games one year and they lost them all, then didn't go to any the next year and they had a winning season. We'd previously been to two Devils games together, and they lost badly to Ottawa and barely managed a tie against Minnesota.

We went together, and the Devils were awful, losing 1-0 to the Islanders. The jersey was no longer undefeated, and Mom was still winless.

However, last Friday, we went to see the Devils play Montreal. This time the Devils killed four first-period penalties, Zach Parise had a hat trick and assisted on the other Devil goal, and Brodeur shut the Habs out. Mom got her win, and my jersey improved to 8-1. So who knows?

I could see that apply to a amateur group like he plays for. They would see the certain fans in the stands and play for them people instead of playing their normal game. Watching on TV though? Come on. The team has no idea who is watching on TV, they don't know if you are watching the game or not. It is as simple as their superstitions. I mean I can understand feeling like a jinx, but that just isn't how it really works.

i have not in any respect met Hank. the in basic terms baseball participant I keep in mind assembly genuinely change into Ernie Banks lower back contained in the 60s. a good guy. Baseball is one in all my usual events to exhibit screen on television, you may leave for 5-10 minutes and not in any respect bypass over an issue. the in basic terms different time you may attempt this even as gazing a carrying adventure is the perfect 30 seconds of a basketball pastime, you comprehend....the 30 seconds that take a million hour to play genuine time.

I don't know about watching them on TV... But the Pens are 0-2-1 for games I have attended at the Mellon Arena this season. One starts to think in order to take one for the team, they might need to sell their tickets. Lol.

you want to know something, its the complete opposite for me. during the beginning of the season I was not able to watch many Sabres games, and they were not doing so great. lately I have seen seen every game and they having been on a hot streak. the on game they played Tampa and I turned my head for just a second and the Lighting scored. It was really weird.

I mean it must be a weird coincidence, right?
