I feel that I am a generous person at Christmas and throughout the year with donations. My girlfriends get together and for Christmas this year it was decided that we would not do the elephant exchange. However the person's who's house it is at has asked that we bring a toy for Toy Mountain in lieu of exchanging. I really don't feel like doing this. I already donate money at my place of work to buy gifts and food, as does my husband at his place of employment. We also donate to another function we go to and on top of it I always ensure I bring a large amount of toys to the Humane society. I just don't want to also be donating here how do I not do this and not look like a smuck infront of my friends?

I know exactly how you feel, so don't feel alone.

Just be honest and firm. I'd say thank you for the opportunity of giving, but point out that you have chosen other specific projects to support and these have received your gifts already this year. Maybe mention the details of the projects contributed to at work to illustrate that you really have contributed already and that you are caring people.

That can surely be an uncomfortable situation. You might try explaining to the host that you set aside a certain amount to donate each year, through out the year, and unfortunately you already reached that amount?

I guess I don't see the big deal. You can get a good toy or child book for about $5 and not have to worry about looking like a Shmuck. It's not like she's asking you to buy a video game console...

If you don't want to donate a toy then don't. Who cares what your friends will think and you don't need to explain anything to anyone.

No need to bring a toy, or explain anything. If someone is rude enough to ask where it is or why you didn't bring one, then look at them horrified and say, "oh I forgot!"

Just say, "I'm really sorry but I am completely broke this year; I've bought Christmas presents and everything and now I've got now money. I'm really sorry."
