They should root for the Washington Nationals.

The Washington Nationals are the closest team, though a lot of fans (especially in Northern Virginia) are still fans of the Baltimore Orioles. Besides those two, the Braves have had their top minor league team in Richmond for decades, so some folks around there are probably Atlanta fans.

Being from Minnesota my team is the Twins. But living in Virginia I don't really cheer for any team but I watch the Nationals over the Orioles because they are newer. I like the Phillies even more but they are further north.

I live in southwest VA and mostly people just pick who they want to cheer for. Really baseball doesn't seem to be talked about a whole lot around here, except for the local minor league teams in the summer. It's just personal preference, I love New England's teams, the red sox and the patriots. In northern VA a lot of people like the nationals.

What about the Washington Nationals? Or the Baltimore Orioles.

My grandmother is from Virginia and she loves the DC teams. Washington Redskins mostly.

I am a Yankees fan but I go to Nationals game to see the other teams. I see the Nationals winning nothing in the near future. All that $$$ spent on a new stadium & to watch them lose. I go to Baltimore when the Yankees come to town.

My girlfriend is from that area and her family cheers for the Braves and has for some time (pre-90's)

I believe that it has to do with their games being televisied on basic cable and the fact that the Braves are the closest southern team and they have/had a minor league affliate in Richmond VA.

You have to go with a team that has pride and tradition. You also have to go with a team that has the most world championships (26) then any other baseball team today. That team is the Yankees!

Most people I know in the Tidewater area cheer for the Yankees as do millions of other baseball fans.
