I recently had several trees cut down and cut up the wood with a chain saw. I still have to split the wood and like the workout so I don't want to rent a log splitter. Which is better to split wood a maul or a sledge and a wedge? I need your input before I buy them.

If the wood is dried, the maul would work fine. Since it isn't, the maul will get hung-up while splitting. get the sledge and wedges. Be careful though, I have hit the wedges off center and had them fly.

I've always used a sledge and a wedge. I find it works well on all sizes of logs. Also, maybe some people can split a log with one swing, but I have never learned the secret. With a wedge, you position it where you want it, and pound as many (or as few) times are needed to make the split.

One more thing: Use safety glasses. The top of the wedge tends to "mushroom" and is prone to throw off a little steel every now and then.

Depends on how long you let the wood dry out before you decide to split it. Wood that is still green(wet) is very difficult to split by hand, so I would use a sledge and a wedge for wet wood. If you allow it to season(dry out) it will much easier to split using just an axe.

If the wood is reasonably straight grained without branches a maul should work well. Green wood splits easier when it is frozen.

I use a maul, can then also use a sledge if it doesn't split on the first swing.

It relies upon on the size of the wood. maximum wood is chop up on account it rather is to special in length to slot in a range. additionally chop up wood has a tendency to dry out greater advantageous and that makes it burn greater advantageous. Small products (3 or 4 inches in diameter) will artwork yet logs larger than that are ideal chop up.

try a go-devil...bury it as far as you can with one swing and drive it the rest of the way through with your sledge...that way you dont have to mess around starting a wedge...
