The books are better than the movies, though unlike the HP movie adaptations, Peter Jackson's were way better. There are differences of course but nothing major. One scene that was not in the books was the Battle of Helms Deep where the elves came to the rescue. There was a battle but there was no dramatic marching from the Lothlorien elves. Though that scene was our favorite!
Aside from the LOTR trilogy, I suggest you also read The Hobbit (to understand Bilbo and Gollum more and the finding of the Ring) and The Silmarillion (for the account of Isildur and The Last Alliance against Sauron).
Good luck and happy reading!

The books are wonderful and you should definitely read them. They are much different from the movies, though. There are whole sections of the book which don't appear in the movies (the character of Tom Bombadil, for instance and an entire plot which takes place when the hobbits arrive home after their journey.)
Arwen's part in the books is quite different (the movies had to give Liv Tyler more to do.)
The movies also make Aragorn and Frodo simpler than they are in the books. Since these two characters are so essential to everything that happens, it's great to read the books so you go on a more complete journey with each of them. Enjoy!

The books give you a much better understanding about what each character was all about. The flat stated bravery of the Hobbits who left everything they knew, the hardship of the soldiers that had been fighting for so long and the ultimate fates of the entire fellowship of the ring. HOWEVER, one problem that I did have with the movie was the role of Faramir. When he captured Sam and Frodo, he figured out that the bore the ring and let them go on their way, with food and guidence. In the movie, he takes them all the way back to the fortress, before letting them go. I never understood why Peter Jackson did that, unless it was to get a Nazgul effect on the bridge. Also, if you read the books carefully, you'll see that Sam, Pippin and Merry are the axis of the story.

The book and the movie are both great, so it's definitely worth your time to experience both of them. If I had to pick though, I would say the book is better. You get much more detail about the main characters (plus, I think Sam's character is really cool in the book but kind of annoying in the movie). I hope you enjoy it!

The book is way better than the movie!!! But of course, if you watch the movie, it helps you visualize the events in the book and makes things clearer sometimes. The book is definitely more detailed and if you love reading, you will most def enjoy reading the trilogy.

Most books are better than their movie counterparts and LotR is no exception. They're much more detailed and a whole lot better. Peter Jackson had to remove a lot to make it fit into his time constraints. Definitely worth the read. I love the movies, and the books just enhance what was in them.

i think you should read the book. it's more valuable - though i think the film is quite good, jackson has made some mistakes and passed over a lot of important plots.
