us brits have the same language barriers!
chocolate bar, settee, (not sure what 5th or 12th grade is, we go by year groups), fizzy pop, pavements (not sidewalks), trousers (not pants), colour (not color), rubbish (not garbage or trash), dustbin man (not refuse collector)
still, i think we all understand each other well enough!
