The roots will be getting established now but as it is the dormant season you won't see any new top growth until Spring. Give them a light potash feed and a good 2-3" mulch around the base in Spring too to keep the moisture in for the rest of the year. If your site is very exposed you might want to stake the privets to stop the wind rocking the roots about (and creating air pockets where water collects and freezes) If not, just leave them and they will burst into life next year. you'll not see much evidence of growth thru winter... all the growing will be going on underground as the roots take hold.... not until new shoots appear in spring after the weather warms will it's growth show itself...........
