Some stands come with reservoirs for water that help keep a cut tree green longer. If you add sugar to the water, it makes a difference as well.
Ten years ago, I started using live trees in potted earth and then after the season was over planted them in the back yard. It is more expensive, but you have a tree for life.
If I don't feel up to a big tree, I decorate a live rosemary that has been shaped. The house smells wonderful and I have a whole hedge now. Very convenient for cooking.

1). Put a little sugar in the stand and water regularly.
2) spray water on the branches periodically.
The whole key is to keep your tree from drying out. The sugar acts as a nutrient for the tree and makes a big difference I have found.

wait to get it till like the 22nd of the year, then water it. That is what my family used to do. My father and I would go out to where he could chop one down for free then he would take it home, put it in a 5 gallon bucket of water in the garage then just before he would take it inside he would cut just a small part of the bottom of the trunk off at an angle then we would put it in the stand and keep it watered every day then christmas day after we opened our gifts that sucker would go to the curb along with all the christmas gift wrap in the trash.

Before you buy one Pull on the branches to make sure a bunch of needles don't come off
Don't buy the tree too soon especially if you keep your house warm
Cut 1/4" off the trunk
Give plenty of fresh COLD water every day

If you absolutely MUST kill a tree to celebrate Christmas (this custom has always puzzled me), cut a live one yourself LATER in the month, and just make SURE it always has water in the base. If you have kitty cats or small dogs, double check the water 'cos for some reason they LOVE to drink it here instead of that expensive decorated bowl of theirs.

buy an artifical one
I never understood the whole cutting down a tree thing either. My parents used to do that and you spend forever picking up the pine needles. Plus real trees pose a great fire risk if you add lights to them.

if you're using a cut tree put it in water and make sure that it always has enough water. If it dries out you'll have to saw the end off it before trying to water it again.
If you use a potted tree water it when the soil starts to feel dry, and make sure your cats (if you have any) aren't peeing in it.

Write a singular. Please. you should appreciate your spouse's opinion in all circumstances. If she thinks it change into that undesirable, you should appreciate her want to save your recognition up contained in the trailer park. She's basically being protecting and loving, no be counted how indignant or dissatisfied she may look on the exterior.
