we always use a card to pay our tab so in the tip spot where we sign, we will write "horrible service-we won't be coming back here!". that way the waiter knows for sure why their wasn't a tip.

My first recourse would be to complain to the manager and ask for a reduction on my bill (this works every time). As to the tip, leave a penny; most servers know that this means the service was really bad. Below average service gets 10%, average service gets 15%, and good service gets 20%.

Talk to the manager before leaving, or email the company directly when arriving home. It usually means a freebie of some sort, which isn't a bad deal, but the restaurant wants and needs to know when their service isn't up to snuff. I'd also leave a very small or no tip - that gets the message across, too.

It would depend on the situation. If I see the place is overcrowded or the server tells us that he/she is new, I might be forgiving. For really bad service under normal conditions, I would leave a small tip, possibly complain to the manager. Not to mention spread it around that it's not a great place to go to.

Leave without paying, we did it once, when the waiter was being an ******(he was throwing the plates on the table), I guess he was having a bad day, but he brought the check and we just left!

Finish the meal, pay the bill, NOT tip and not return to the restaurant. I may call the manager later and explain.

If i can walk out then i would. Otherwise, I will call the manager's attention and leave no tip. I will not go back to that restaurant anymore.

If it is the waiter or waitress that gives me bad service, I don't leave a tip.

I don't tip and I complain to the manager. If it happens a second time, I don't go back, no matter how good the food is.
